About

Today in Ancient Rome covers one day of Roman history at a time: emperors, battles, laws, births, deaths and the festivals of the Roman year.

Sources

Every entry cites an ancient source (Suetonius, Tacitus, Ammianus Marcellinus, Ovid's Fasti, Varro, the Historia Augusta and others) and links a modern reference. Where ancient writers disagree, or a date rests only on modern reconstruction, the entry is marked uncertain. If no sourced event exists for a day, the page says so; we never fill a day with a guess. Dates use the Julian calendar.
